What is a sexually transmitted infection?
A sexually transmitted infection, or an STI, is an infection or disease that is transmitted via sexual contact. If you are worried that you may have a STI, you should go for a check up at a sexual health clinic as soon as possible. If you think you may have an STI, do not have sexual contact (including oral sex) without a condom until after your visit to the sexual health clinic and when it is safe to do so. You should also avoid sexual contact while awaiting results.
Signs that you may have a sexually transmitted infection
- Unusual discharge from the penis, vagina or anus
- Pain or itching when urinating
- Skin growths or lumps around the genitals or anus
- Unusual vaginal bleeding
- A rash or itching around the genitals or anus
- Warts around the genitals, anus, mouth or throat (although oral warts are very rare)
Go to a sexual health clinic for a checkup if:
- You have symptoms of an STI
- A sexual partner of yours has an STI
- You’re worried about an STI after unprotected sexual contact
- You’re pregnant with symptoms of an STI
