Managing loneliness at Christmas

The festive season is often portrayed as a time filled with warmth, celebration, and togetherness. Christmas adverts show families gathered around tables, friends exchanging gifts, and loved ones reunited, but for many people, this isn’t the reality. If you’re feeling isolated this time of year, you’re certainly not alone, and there is support available.

Ways to cope with loneliness

  1. Reach out for support

If you feel able, talking to someone can make a difference. Whether with a friend, neighbour, or support line, it can help you feel less alone. It’s okay to let others know you’re finding this time of year difficult.

  1. Keep to a daily routine

Days can feel longer when you’re alone. Creating a gentle routine, meals at set times, a walk, reading, or a hobby, can provide structure and help lift your mood.

  1. Get involved in local activities

Community events and groups can help build new connections. Whether it’s a coffee morning, crafts, singing group, church service, or volunteer opportunity, being part of something can help reduce loneliness.

We’re here to support you

Many people struggle with loneliness at Christmas, and reaching out for help takes strength, not weakness. If this season feels difficult, please remember there are people, services, and communities ready to support you. Find local community groups and activities here.
